Trek Overview

The Gomukh–Tapovan Trek is a breathtaking Himalayan adventure in Uttarakhand, taking trekkers through the source of the Ganges River, high-altitude glacial meadows, and spectacular mountain landscapes. Starting from Gangotri, the trek leads to Gomukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier, and continues to Tapovan, a high-altitude meadow at approximately 4,600 meters (15,100 ft), offering panoramic views of the Bhagirathi peaks, Shivling, and Meru.

This trek combines adventure, natural beauty, and spiritual significance. Tapovan is not only a paradise for trekkers and photographers but also a serene place that inspires a deep sense of connection with nature. The trail passes through moraines, glacial streams, and alpine meadows, offering a true Himalayan experience far from the bustle of the plains.

Quick Itinerary

Day 1: Haridwar/Rishikesh to Gangotri (Drive, 245 km / 10–12 hrs)
â–¸ Drive through scenic valleys and forests to Gangotri. Attend Ganga Aarti and overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 2: Gangotri to Chirbasa (Trek, 9 km)
â–¸ Easy trek through pine forests with views of Bhagirathi peaks. Camp overnight at Chirbasa.

Day 3: Chirbasa to Bhojbasa (Trek, 5 km)
â–¸ Short trek to Bhojbasa at the foot of Gangotri Glacier. Enjoy stunning mountain and river views. Overnight camp.

Day 4: Bhojbasa to Gomukh to Tapovan (Trek, 6 km)
â–¸ Trek to Gomukh, the source of the Ganga, then ascend to Tapovan. Camp with views of Meru and Bhagirathi peaks.

Day 5: Tapovan Rest Day
â–¸ Rest or explore nearby caves. Enjoy panoramic snowy peaks and serene alpine surroundings.

Day 6: Tapovan to Bhojbasa (Trek, 11 km)
â–¸ Descend from Tapovan to Bhojbasa, enjoying sunrise views and scenic mountain trails. Overnight camp.

Day 7: Bhojbasa to Gangotri (Trek, 9 km)
â–¸ Steep descent to Gangotri. Visit the Shiva temple and overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 8: Gangotri to Haridwar/Rishikesh (Drive, 245 km / 10 hrs)
â–¸ Drive back to Haridwar/Rishikesh. Optional stop at Gangnani hot springs en route. Trip concludes.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 : Haridwar/Rishikesh to Gangotri. (245kms)

  • Our team member will meet you at Haridwar/Rishikesh and then drive to uttarkhand tehri dam is on the way.
    • This journey is 10-12 hours but you will go through some picturesque places so you will not get bored.
    • You will go through the lush green forest which will soo your mind and from the places where you will get the views of the great Himalayas and Harshil.
    • Reach Gangotri, which is famous for a holy pilgrimage. go to a hotel rest there for some time and then explore this place on your own. ganga arti is very famous here do not miss to attend that.

 

Day 2 : Gangotri to Chirbasa. (9kms)

  • This is the first day of trekking and you will be covering around 9km. start early so that you can enjoy the trek at leisure and also because only certain number of visitors are allowed to enter the park every day.
    • Today trek is an easy one as you have to walk on the leveled trail.
    • The way of chirbasa is through pine forest we are going to reach there in a few minutes.
    • Tou can have a glance at gomukh glacier and Bhagirathi group of peaks start setting you tents relax there and dinner and overnight stay in tents.

 

Day 3 : Chirbasa to Bhojbasa. (5kms)

  • Today trek is easy and you can reach bhojbasa with no difficulty.
    • Have your breakfast and start your trek the path is narrow and the trail will take you through some landslide prone areas.
    • The view along the trail is stunning with touring mountain in the background and the sound of the river in the fore ground.
    • The campsite at bhojbasa is situated at the foot of the Gangotri glacier,and trekking can see the glacier in the distance.

 

Day 4 : Bhojbasa to Gomukh to tapovan. (6kms)

  • The fourth day of the trek is the highlight of the journey,as trekkers visit the source of ganga river at gomukh.
    • The trek from bhijbasa to gomukh is steep and rocky,and the last stretch involves crossing the Gangotri glacier.
    • The route from gomukh to tapoven is a steep and short climb. it taken about 2.5hours to reach there.
    • Set up your camps at tapoven and enjoy the majestic views of meru peaks Bhagirathi 1,2,3 peaks.

 

Day 5 : Tapovan rest day

  • Today you can rest or explore the surrounding here are caves and you can find saints meditating here.
    • From your campsite enjoy the mesmerizing views of peaks fully covered in a while sheet of snow, you can just stare at them in peace away from all the worries of life.
    • The area around tapoven and known for its stunning. and trekkers can spend the day taking in the sight and sounder of the surrounding mountains.

 

Day 6 : Tapovan to Bhojbasa. (11kms)

  • This is a long walk from tapovan to chirbasa is over 10-11 kms but since you will be going downhill you would not take as much time as it took to climb up.
    • Before starting your trek do not miss the sunrise from tapovan trekking because the peaks look different when the rays full on them.
    • You will have packed lunch enroute and reach chirbasa by late afternoon.
    • Bhojbasa was your campsite on day 3 this is barren but views are spectacular today spend your night here relaxing in tents.

Day 7 : Bhojbasa to Gangotri. (9kms)

  • From bhojbasa on the way back to Gangotri, a 19km trek it will take you about 8 hours.
    • Today’s trek is a steep and tough decend through the area of moraines, you must be very careful while decending.
    • Capture the last sight of mt shivling and bid it goodbye, it accompanied you from the starting till the end.
    • Gangotri the holy city and shrine of goddess ganga, visit the temple of lord shiva in the evening then have your food in hotel and overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 8 : Gangotri to Haridwar/Rishikesh. (245kms)

  • Post breakfast, start your drive to Haridwar/Rishikesh it is a long drive of about 10 hours.
    • About 1.5 hours prior to reaching Uttarkashi, we reach a quaint place called gangnani where you may take a dip in the natural hot water sulphur spring here.
    • You will reach Haridwar/Rishikesh 7-8 pm.trip end here.
