Trek Overview

Kashmir is often called “Paradise on Earth”, and the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is perhaps the best way to experience why. This iconic trail takes you across lush green meadows, alpine valleys, and seven breathtakingly beautiful glacial lakes – each one more magical than the last.

As you trek, you’ll witness the surreal beauty of Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, Gangbal, and Nundkol lakes, all cradled by snow-covered peaks and flowering meadows. This trek isn’t just about scenic beauty—it’s a spiritual journey, a soul-refreshing escape into nature’s masterpiece.

Whether you’re a passionate trekker, a nature photographer, or just someone seeking to disconnect and feel alive, the Kashmir Great Lakes trek will stay etched in your memory forever.

Highlights

  • Witness 7 stunning alpine lakes, each with a unique color and charm
  • Camp beside turquoise waters with reflections of towering peaks
  • Traverse flower-filled meadows, ridges, pine forests, and boulder sections
  • Interact with Gujjar shepherds and experience authentic Kashmiri culture
  • Ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers
  • A complete off-grid experience with limited mobile connectivity

Best Time to Visit

The best window to do this trek is July to early September. During this time, the snow has melted enough to clear the trails, wildflowers bloom across the meadows, and the lakes are at their most vibrant. Days are pleasantly cool, while nights can get quite cold at higher camps.

Difficulty Level

The trek is moderate to difficult due to the long walking hours (6–9 hrs daily), multiple ascents and descents, and high altitude. It’s best suited for people with prior trekking experience or those with a good level of fitness. Daily elevation changes can be intense, but are manageable with the right mindset and preparation.

Essential Things to Carry

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Manali to Jobra (Drive), Trek to Chika:

After a scenic drive from Manali, your trek starts at Jobra. A short 2-3 hour walk through pine and maple forests leads to Chika, a beautiful campsite beside the Rani Nallah.

Day 2 – Chika to Balu ka Ghera:

Today’s trail runs beside the stream and through boulder fields. You’ll camp at Balu ka Ghera, which literally means “bed of sand” — a windy, high-altitude meadow with a stunning view of the valley ahead.

Day 3 – Balu ka Ghera to Hampta Pass, descend to Shea Goru:

This is the most exciting and challenging day. You’ll climb steeply to the Hampta Pass and witness breathtaking views from the top. The descent to Shea Goru is steep and on loose rocks — trekking poles help a lot!

Day 4 – Shea Goru to Chatru, drive to Chandratal (optional):

A gentle descent through moraine and rivers brings you to Chatru — a tiny place with 3 dhabas and crazy mountain views. If road & weather allow, drive to Chandratal Lake for the ultimate high-altitude reward.

Day 5 – Return to Manali:

Time to head back, with sore legs but a glowing heart. You’ve just crossed a high Himalayan pass — something very few get to experience.
